En circle stands for flawless and perfect, a reference to the all embracing virtue in Buddhism from the Lotus Sutra. The Circle is the principle of Zen written by this powerful daimyo signalling the ultimate equality of all living creatures.

Dokku Shoshi (1624-1688)
Shoshi, native of the Fujan province of China founded the Kanshoin temple near Manpukuji. This one line calligraphy ( ichigyosho) conveys that the fundamental truth of Zen Buddhism is fathomless though from it the student can learn the laws of Nature. – Kansho Dokku Sho -

Kosen Shoton (1633-1695)
Famous for his literary stlye Kosen was also a consummate calligrapher, this masterpiece likening Zen doctrine to the depth of the vast ocean as well as being universal as the moons light that shines on everyone. -Ho kai (teaching sea) shin getsu (essence of things, moon)
